A'propos, czy ktoś zna genezę nazwy "Jeep"?


G P czytaj [dzi pi], czy ogolnego przeznaczenia General Purpose vehicle. od
czasu kiedy USA weszly do II wojny. Podobnie konstrukcje mieli moze nawet
pierwsi nyli Rosjanie, glównie dla szybkiego przemieszczania dowódców  na
polu walki.

Nazwa Jeep jakos w Polsce powojennej nie zabardzo mogla sie zadomowic,
glównie jak podejrzewam ze wzgledów fonetycznych. Znacznie popularniejszy
byl ,,gazik'' = ruski GAZ  [Gorkowskij AwtoZawod] Jeszcze calkiem niedawno
mozna bylo spotkac milicyjne lub wojskowe gaziki.

After two consecutive Mars failures, NASA is considering returning to the
Red Planet with a rover that would land in an air bag cocoon like the one
used by the successful Mars Pathfinder in 1997.

The air bag lander concept is one of two types of missions being considered
for launch in 2003, NASA said Friday. The other would be a spacecraft that
orbits Mars.

The space agency said the two choices were narrowed from dozens of options
that had been under study, and it will decide in July whether to launch and
which option to use.

NASA enjoyed tremendous success with Pathfinder, a spacecraft that used a
parachute to slow its descent, then inflated air bags around itself, let go
of the chute and dropped to the Martian surface.

After bouncing to a halt, Pathfinder deflated its air bags and deployed
science instruments and the little rover Sojourner. The mission lasted from
July 4, 1997, until Sept. 27, 1997.

But NASA's fortunes turned when the $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter
vanished near the planet last September and then the $165 million Mars Polar
Lander disappeared in December as it was about to land. That lander was
designed to use rockets to lower the craft to the surface.

The potential mission without a lander would be called the Mars Surveyor
Orbiter and would be designed to do all the science tasks that the Mars
Climate Orbiter was intended to do.

The other choice, the Mars Mobile Lander, would use a rover design that has
already been operated in field tests and was considered for a now-canceled
2001 mission. The big 286-pound rover would be in an enclosure cushioned by
air bags during landing.
