Krakow. Well ladies and lads of CSTO, my wife and I would just like to post a very big thank you here for the incredibly friendly welcome you gave us. Not to mention the marvelous Ukrainian lunch and the jokes, stories, anecdotes and other exchanges of opinion. It was the high point of our visit, and that is really saying something because Kraków is a fantastic city in itself with the Market Square, castle, salt mines and history. The castle is amazing and we spent an hour soaking it up as Maciek suggested. Something (free) in the air up there.

I came away mightily impressed with yourselves, Kraków, Poland and the Polish people in general. There's a buzz about the place, and it doesn't seem to have the sordid elements of capitalism (or at least not visible and we were out at night, and stag parties obviously excepted) as places like Prague that I saw last year (which also has great architecture and sights). Almost everyone is forward-looking though Soviet-era 'service' and surliness can be found if you really want it. Actually if I'd known of it I'd have taken the Communist-era tour of Nova Huta- the company is owned by the son-in-law of our guide to Auschwitz (I won't discuss this visit here at all- if anyone wants my impressions we can start a separate thread).

Talking to yourselves makes me also look at and even sometimes question the values of liberal democracy that we've taken for granted for so long (except in places like Finland where they know exactly what it is). So when someone approached us for cash while we were sitting at a cafe yesterday on Market Square, he was lifted off his feet by the police before he could finish his sentence, although he did shout something in Polish with the word 'Democracia' in it- which I took to mean 'so this is democracy, is it?'. At which my wife and I looked at each other and then discussed it. The conclusion? Well, yes, it is. If we vote for the politicians who want more taxes for more policemen to control this behavior as opposed to being forced to listen to you interrupt everyone's day by begging (and he'd plainly accosted several hundred people already) as opposed to not paying the extra tax to put up with you then yes, that's democracy. If we vote for politicians who promise to cut police services and put up more social services instead but without raising taxes to prevent such behaviour then that's democracy too. At least we have a choice. Hopefully it's an informed one and the politicians are honest or at least there's the possibility of voting them out (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_California_recall).

Started the book on the plane (thank you for this also- a treasured addition to my library) and already learning new things I never realized before like how vague a sense of nationality can be in the borderlands.

If any of you ever plan a trip to Dublin or Ireland, please let me know to give you guidance. Plus you can be assured you'll get as good a welcome here as we received from all of you there- remember this is the land where a stranger is only a friend you have not met yet.
