Mars is kicking up a little dust…just as a wave of landers nears the Red
Planet. A regional dust storm is now whipping up in Mars' northern hemisphere -
but scientists are keeping an eye on the activity in the event it becomes a
global event.
Now streaking toward a Christmas touchdown on Mars is the British-built Beagle
2 lander. Also closing in on the red planet is the first of two NASA Mars
rovers, Spirit. It is slated to arrive the evening of January 3rd. Spirit is
targeted to land at Gusev crater. "

At the moment, NASA Mars rover scientists are not overly concerned about the
dust storm, spotted late last week, said Matthew Golombek, a member of the
rover science team from Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena,
California.
However, such a dust storm, if it became larger, could impact the overall
atmospheric structure of Mars, Golombek said during a Mars meeting for
journalists held December 13-14 at the University of Colorado, Boulder. If the
dust storm becomes a global storm, "then there may be cause for action," he
said.
As example, the entry and descent parameters for Spirit could be altered,
Golombek said, such as earlier parachute deployment due to increased
atmospheric density.
"If it remains a regional storm, there's nothing that you would do. There's no
need to do anything. We get daily weather reports from Mars Global Surveyor. If
it turned into a global dust storm then there might be cause for some action,"
Golombek said.
Martian storms are solar-powered, that is, the Sun heats Mars' atmosphere,
which in turn stirs up martian dust."
